Tips
Tips to reduce the damage after a flood, wind, fireor other disaster
Flooding, water damage and sewage damage
Consider all flood water as being contaminated with biohazard waste; avoid skin contact
Ventilate all wet areas if it’s practical to do so
Remove small objects from the floor, but avoid lifting heavy, waterlogged items such as carpets
Avoid entering rooms with sagging, waterlogged ceilings
Remove electrical appliances from flooded areas, but avoid using them until they’re checked by a pro
Gather documents and small, dyed items whose colors may bleed
Wash hands frequently, and keep children and pets away
Fire damage and smoke damage
Remain safe – Only enter a fire or smoke damage property if firefighters tell you it’s safe
Avoid excessive traffic through fire damage areas, and cover traffic areas with old towels or linens
Wash houseplants with mild soapy water on both sides of their leaves
Avoid using any affected electrical appliances or outlets
Avoid entering rooms whose ceiling are sagging with water from fire fighting
Crime scene cleanup, blood cleanup and unattended deaths
Keep children, pets and vulnerable family members away until after professionals have cleaned the area.
